Part-Time Online High School Maths Teacher (evenings)

Sheila South Africa

Job Description

Are you a Senior or FET Phase Mathematics teacher looking for…

an opportunity to help hundreds of learners who struggle with maths…

developing innovative approaches to online teaching…

from the comfort of your home in the evenings…

whilst earning a decent extra income…

Then look no further 🙂

What’s Watobe?

We’re an ed tech startup based in South Africa and the UK, and we’re on a mission to radically transform learning for millions of children. In short, we’re looking to expand access to high quality teachers (like you!) to learners whose parents can’t afford high-end private schools or one-to-one tutoring. We’re currently teaching live online maths lessons to learners in grades 7 to 12, though we have plans to expand our grade and subject offering.

Watobe was cofounded by Erik Lonnroth and Henry Warren, two serial entrepreneurs who spent a combined 30+ years working on education innovation projects across Europe and Africa.

What would you be doing?

Nothing short of re-imagining the future of learning in South Africa. We’re taking online classes to scale, figuring out how to provide the highest quality lessons to the largest number of learners.

You’ll be teaching mathematics classes to 100+ learners via Zoom (yes, it’s possible, if done smartly!). With the help of teaching assistants and Watobe’s technical support staff, you’ll work through explanations, practice questions and the occasional maths puzzle for learners achieving 30-60% in maths. You’ll be working on differentiation strategies and ensuring that everyone gets a chance to contribute either verbally or via chat.

Needless to say, you’ll need to have phenomenal subject matter knowledge and be captivating “on stage” in order to keep our learners engaged for a whole hour. Thankfully you’ll have rockstar colleagues to lean on and learn from.

In addition to teaching live classes, you’ll also be authoring short maths quizzes to assess learners’ understanding. We report the quiz scores back to parents, along with class attendance rates.

What we’re looking for

A Senior Phase or FET Mathematics teacher with a completed teaching qualification
At least 3 years of maths teaching experience from a reputable school
Detailed knowledge of the CAPS maths curriculum for your grades
Communication skills – you’ll need a flawless command of written and spoken English
Articulate and engaging on camera – can you keep 100 learners captivated?
Warm and friendly – we try to reduce maths anxiety by creating a safe and welcoming space
Ease with technology – you’ll need to get up to speed with lots of new tools
Innovative thinking – you’re always looking for ways to improve existing processes (if you were frequently frustrated by the lack of innovation in your previous roles, that’s a good sign you’ll fit in at Watobe)
Karaoke skills (optional, but useful if learners are dozing off)

What are the hours?

All of our lessons are held between 17:00 and 19:00, Monday to Thursday.
Each course comprises two hour-long lessons per week. The complete timetable can be found at https://www.watobe.co.za/faq
Most of our teachers teach 2 courses concurrently, i.e. 4 hours a week
Lesson prep, including authoring of short comprehension quizzes, can be done whenever it suits you and is estimated to take an additional 4-6 hours
We also hold 2 hours of meetings a week, typically on Friday afternoons after school
Total time commitment for 2 courses is 12 hours a week (of which 4 hours actual teaching)
For 1 course it’s 7 hours a week (of which 2 hours actual teaching)

How much does it pay?

R15,000 a month for two courses (4 lessons a week)
R8,000 a month for one course (2 lessons a week)
We pay extra if you teach during holidays

What are the perks?

Teach from home (you’ll need a quiet place and a fibre internet connection)
Work directly with a highly experienced management team and a vibrant team of teachers and teaching assistants
Loads of professional growth opportunities – we want this to be a real springboard for you. If you excel in this role we’re open to discussing fulltime opportunities where you can help determine our internal processes, pedagogy, and scaling strategies
A fun working environment where we genuinely care for our team members and do all we can to ensure you are happy and that you grow as a person

Who are the folks you’ll be working with?

Erik Lönnroth – CEO/Co-founder (Former management consultant, polymath, speaks 7 languages, lived in 10 African countries, starts each day with an hour meditation, thrives at the intersection of psychology and technology, hasn’t worn a suit and tie since 2013)
Henry Warren – Chair/Co-founder (Founder of multiple businesses and charities, former Director of Innovation at Pearson, dad of 3)
Courtney Crosson – Product Manager (oversees the Zoom live classes and the teaching team, has an Engineering degree from UCT, currently working remotely from Bali)
Your fellow teachers – we only hire top candidates so you’ll be surrounded by amazing talent
Team mates in other roles, who will expose you to the culture of a fast-growing startup (very different from a traditional school or big corporate!)

Sold! How do I apply?

When you apply through LinkedIn you’ll be taken to some screening questions and a place to upload your CV.

Good luck!

Erik, Henry, Courtney and the Watobe Team
